bombercommand.info
Greetings, and welcome to our website. We hope you enjoy your stay, and please let us know by signing our Guestbook when you've finished - the link is on the left. Some sections of the website may not be working yet, but keep checking back and they should be up and running within the next few weeks. We also have a huge amount of research that we have yet to type and add to the site - this is an ongoing process by Steve and Greg so there will be many additions to the site for years to come!!
This website is the culmination of several years research by the two authors, Steve "Smudger" Smith, and Greg "Taffy" Harrison, and currently the content reflects their respective areas of research - 3 Group in the case of Steve, and 1 Group for Greg. It is hoped that researchers of other Groups will join up with us in the future, and allow the site to offer a broader and more "overall" picture of Bomber Command's activities during World War 2.
Over our years of research we (Steve and Greg) have had the honour and pleasure to meet and correspond with with a number of ex-Bomber Command veterans. These encounters, now sadly less frequent, have made a lasting impression on us both. The determination and courage of these young men and women throughout the bomber offensive of World War 2 is an inspiration to us and it is for this reason that we offer our services freely, especially to the families and loved ones of those who served. Our aim is to provide an insight into the activities of not just the individual airman but also the squadron and the Group in which he served. This information can be augmented with details on specific aircraft if required (to date the types covered include the Avro Lancaster, Handley Page Halifax, Short Stirling, Vickers Wellington and the Fairey Battle).
All information provided by bombercommand.info is drawn from official R.A.F documentation. Once again our aim is to provide authentic and original information, which is not drawn from 'other' unaccredited sources. As would beset any research group our archives will not and cannot cover all aspects of our respective bomber Groups. However it is our intention to regularly add to our collective database. This will, as any serious researcher appreciates, take a considerable amount of time and effort especially when working with original documents gleaned from many visits to the Public Record Office, the RAF Museum Archives at Hendon, and various County Record Offices.
What you wont find on this website are lists and lists of aircraft that served with a squadron, or the code letters they carried. You wont find non-descript lists of targets attacked by Bomber Command with no additional or supporting information, or lists of (not always correct!!) aircraft serial numbers lost on a particular night with no additional or supporting information. And you certainly wont see the authors and researchers of this site holding out the begging bowl and asking you to pay for their research, like some other websites you may have come across. At bombercommand.info, the research is pitched at a slightly higher level, with no plagiarism of books you can find at the library, but with constant reference to primary sources. These primary sources, many of which we have in our private collections, include: -
- Command, Group, Squadron, Unit, and Flight Operations Record Books
- Combat Reports
- Escape and Evasion Reports
- "K" Reports
- Form 78 aircraft "Movement Cards"
- Form 1180 aircraft "Accident Cards"
- Air Accident Investigation Branch reports
- Bomber Command "Loss Cards"
- County Police "situation reports"
- Aircrew Log Books
